Workshop Report: Assessing Species Vulnerability to Climate Change, Applying the RMRS Assessment Tool-August 2010 (Legacy 09-433) pdf [5.74 MB]

On 8/30/2010, the Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) conducted a workshop "Assessing Species Vulnerability to Climate Change. Using the RMRS-USFS assessment tool to assist management goals in the face of climate change" at the Tucson Regional Office of Arizona Game & Fish Department. The purpose of this workshop was to present the findings of Legacy Project #09-433 which used a recently developed species vulnerability to climate change assessment tool to identify relative vulnerability, areas of specific vulnerabilities and potential management actions for threatened, endangered and at-risk species on the Ft. Huachuca and Barry M. Goldwater Ranges in southern Arizona.

Modeling the Impact of Climate and Anthropogenic Change on Birds and Vegetation on Military Lands in California - Final Report, July 2011 (Legacy 10-465) pdf [4.82 MB]

This project analyzes climate-change impacts on bird distributions on DoD lands in California, emphasizing threatened, endangered, and at-risk species (TER-S) and species of special concern, assesses changes in broad vegetation types, evaluates how changes vary regionally and among installations, determines the effects of changes in land use (housing development) on bird distributions in areas surrounding installations, tests the effectiveness of assessments of species vulnerability to climate change, and summarizes the findings that may help to inform forward-looking environmental management on DoD installations.

An Assessment of Vulnerability of Threatened, Endangered, and At-Risk Species to Climate Change at The Barry M. Goldwater Range, Arizona Final Report - August 2010 (Legacy 09-433) pdf [1.42 MB]

This assessment uses basic ecological principals to rank individual species of interest within the eastern portion of the Barry M. Goldwater Range according to predicted climate change responses and associated population declines balanced with responses expected to incur resilience or population increases. Further, specific areas of vulnerability, research needs, and management implications are identified for each species.

An Assessment of Vulnerability of Threatened, Endangered, and At-Risk Species to Climate Change at Fort Huachuca, Arizona - Final Report, August 2010 (Legacy 09-433) pdf [1.77 MB]

This assessment uses basic ecological principals to rank individual TER-S species within the Fort Huachuca region according to predicted climate change responses and associated population declines balanced with responses expected to incur resilience or population increases. Further, specific areas of vulnerability, research needs, and management implications as related to climate change are identified for each species.

Climate Change: Adaptive Management Tools and Strategies - Final Report December 2010 (Legacy 10-466) pdf [329 KB]

This report describes the climate change tools presented in the Climate Change Workshop, given at the 2010 National Military Fish and Wildlife Association meeting. This also includes workshop evaluation results.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Guidance for Conserving DoD Ecological Resources Workshop - Training Materials, January 2011 (Legacy 10-460) pdf [12.10 MB]

Contains 16 PowerPoint presentations and exercises regarding climate change adaptation and vulnerability assessments.

Scanning the Conservation Horizon: A Guide to Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (Legacy 09-460) pdf [4.91 MB]

This guide offers resource managers a way to understand the impact of climate change on species and ecosystems and is a new tool to support efforts to safeguard these valuable natural resources. The peer-reviewed guide is designed to help conservation professionals and natural resource managers craft effective strategies to prepare for and cope with the effects of rapid climate change on the nation's fish, wildlife, and natural habitats.

Tools

A Tool to Assess the Vulnerability of Terrestrial Vertebrate Species to Climate Change - August 2010 (Legacy 09-433) pdf [358 KB]

Species assessments of vulnerability or extinction risk are management tools used to prioritize conservation needs so that actions can be directed in an effective and efficient manner. This document contains a simple and flexible tool for assessing the relative risk of individual species to population declines or increases associated with projected changes in climate and related phenomena.

A Tool to Assess the Vulnerability of Plant Species to Climate Change - August 2010 (Legacy 09-433) pdf [215 KB]

Despite lack of information on plant species response to climate change, some simple predictions can be made regarding plant traits likely to be associated with lesser or greater vulnerability to declines with projected future climate. This document provides a simple scoring system based on a few readily identifiable and predictive plant traits to assess vulnerability of individual plant species to climate change.
