Stories of Hope: Saheli

Varsha's Story from Saheli.

Varsha came to live in the US on an H4 visa with her husband, her child was born in the US. After 7 years of marriage, she was abandoned in Mumbai and left without a passport for herself and her child. Varsha, after many struggles, came back to her home in Massachusetts and found it locked. She called 911 and with the help of the local police, Varsha was put in touch with Saheli.

Saheli volunteers worked hard and found an Indian motel owner who gave her a place to stay. During this time, trained Saheli counselors provided Varsha a great deal of support and friendship. A well-known South Asian lawyer advised Varsha of her legal rights in the US, and helped her to document the abuse she experienced.

Within a few months, she helped Varsha obtain a special U visa and work permit reserved for women who can document domestic abuse. Women from Saheli helped Varsha continuously over one year through this long process - finding the right lawyer, providing transportation, purchasing a laptop, and supporting Varsha with kindness and friendship in a fast paced, busy and impersonal culture.

Today, we are happy to share with you the news that Varsha is working legally in the United States and on her way to a safe and secure life for herself and her child.

On Domestic Violence in MA, An Encouraging Trend

In a Boston Globe editorial on December 31, 2012 remembers those who died in 2012 as a result of domestic violence related homicide. The number of such homicides was lower in 2012 than years past--12 in 2012 compared to 26 in 2011 and 32 in 2010 to 26--additionally 8 perpetrators were either killed or committed suicide.  "Advocates for Jane Doe Inc., which tracks the numbers of victims, emphasize that more vigilance is necessary to address a problem that remains epidemic in American society. Data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey indicate that, every minute, 24 American adults are victims of physical assault, rape, or stalking."

Reflections on Masculinity: The Evolution of White Ribbon Day Ambassadors

Reaching the 5-year mark of Jane Doe Inc.’s Massachusetts White Ribbon Day (WRD) Campaign prompted us to step back and ask how the campaign is making a difference. We had our own theories and had in fact seen evidence of the WRD Campaign’s impact in terms of the public dialogue on the issue, involvement of more men in local and statewide efforts, responsiveness in the policy arena and elsewhere. What about the impact of the campaign on men themselves? In the fall of 2012, Jane Doe Inc. (JDI) convened a diverse group of male thought leaders who have been active Ambassadors in the White Ribbon Day Campaign and asked them to share how their own thoughts, perspectives, and commitments have evolved over the course of their involvement. Read about their reflections, observations, hopes and pledges.

JDI supports swift and thorough state and federal action on firearm safety & control

JDI applauds President Obama, Vice President Biden and Governor Patrick for making firearm safety legislation a top priority.  It will save thousands of lives of victims of sexual and domestic violence each year.  While tragedies in Aurora, Newtown and Phoenix sparked the current momentum for action on gun control, we cannot lose sight of the fact that the risks associated with firearm access are of daily concern to sexual and domestic violence victims.  Your voice is needed to support these efforts.
