NEW MEXICO GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

New Mexico is a promising region for geothermal energy development because of high temperature gradients (that is, high temperatures found at relatively shallow depths) in its volcanic fields and in the area surrounding the Rio Grande Rift. The BLM and the U.S. Forest Service issued a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement in 2008 to facilitate the leasing of Federal lands for geothermal energy development in twelve western states, including New Mexico.
