STURGIS Decommissioning and Dismantling
The STURGIS, a former World War II Liberty Ship, was converted into the first floating nuclear power plant in the 1960s. Before being shutdown in 1976, the STURGIS’ nuclear reactor, MH-1A, was used to generate electricity for military and civilian use in the Panama Canal. It departed for Galveston April 16, 2015. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District and the Calhoun Port Authority will host a public scoping meeting Jan. 24, 2017 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Bauer Civic Center, 2300 Highway 35 North, Port Lavaca, Texas, 77979.
