Welcome to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Web page for the water resources of Indiana; this is your direct link to all kinds of water-resource information. Here you'll find information on Indiana's rivers and streams. You'll also find information about ground water, water quality, and many other topics. The USGS operates the most extensive satellite network of streamgaging stations in the state, many of which form the backbone of flood-warning systems.

The USGS provides current ("real-time") stream stage and streamflow, water-quality, ground-water levels, precipitation, and lake-stage for over 200 sites in Indiana.

USGS Hydrologic Support to Prevent Interbasin Transfer of Asian Carp at Eagle Marsh, Indiana

A carp fence at Eagle Marsh, Indiana.

Eagle Marsh was classified by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a high risk pathway for Asian Carp migration from the Wabash River to Lake Erie. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Little River Wetland Project and Federal partners through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative built a temporary adult carp barrier fence across a part of Eagle Marsh to prevent movement of adult Asian Carp from the Wabash River basin into the St. Mary’s and Maumee Rivers when Eagle Marsh floods.
USGS has measured water levels at the adult Asian Carp barrier fence since 2010. When flooding raises water levels at the fence, alerts are sent to State and local resource staff who respond and inspect for fish.  USGS also measures streamflow and water temperature on Graham McCulloch Ditch and Junk Ditch to understand how temporary flow direction changes affect flooding at Eagle Marsh and fish habitat.  Links to data from the Eagle Marsh and stream sites can be accessed at the project web page.

A New Application has Been Added to StreamStats for Indiana!

Since 2007, StreamStats for Indiana, which was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water, has provided to users a Web-based application to obtain basin characteristics and estimated streamflow statistics at gaged and ungaged locations throughout the state of Indiana. Also, if a selected ungaged location is on a coordinated stream reach, the application has provided to users the coordinated flood frequency streamflow values.
Starting in November 2013, a new application, which was developed in cooperation with Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs and in partnership with the Indiana Silver Jackets Hazard Mitigation Task, has been incorporated into the existing StreamStats for Indiana to provide estimated bankfull-channel dimensions of width, mean depth, and cross-sectional area for non-urban wadeable streams throughout the state of Indiana. To showcase these applications, a new introductory web page has been developed and the link to that web page is available below:
                https://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/indiana.html
If you have any questions regarding StreamStats for Indiana, please contact Moon Kim at the USGS Indiana Water Science Center.

National Water-Quality Assessment Program
Pesticide National Synthesis Project - Annual Pesticide Use Maps: 1992-2009

NAWQA Pesticide Use Map.

The pesticide-use maps provided on this web site show the geographic distribution of estimated use on agricultural land in the conterminous United States for numerous pesticides. Maps were created by allocating county-level use estimates to agricultural land within each county. A graph accompanies each map, which shows annual national use by major crop for the mapped pesticide for each year during the period. These pesticide use estimates are suitable for evaluating national and regional patterns and trends of annual pesticide use.

USGS Indiana-Kentucky Strategic Science Plan

The USGS Indiana–Kentucky Water Science Center Commonwealth provides reliable hydrologic and water-related ecological information to aid in the understanding of the use and management of water resources in Indiana, Kentucky, and the Nation. Input for the new 3–5 year Commonwealth strategic science plan was received from cooperators, stakeholders, and staff and was considered in the development of the objectives and strategic actions (for the next 3-5 years) for each of six science-focus areas: Hydrologic Monitoring Networks, Hazards, Ecosystems Science, Water Availability and Demand, Energy Production and Impacts, and Public Health.
