Current Project Description: The purpose of the Segment II Flood Control and Coastal Emergency (FCCE) nourishment project is to reconstruct areas of the eroded beach and increase storm protection to upland development along portions of the Broward County Segment II shoreline. The current work is 100% federally funded under the FCCE program, which is in response to impacts from Hurricane Sandy’s passage in 2012. The project places emergency sand fill along two discrete reaches of the Segment II shoreline, including renourishment of a portion of the previously constructed Pompano Beach and Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (LBTS) reaches.
Location: The Segment II shoreline is located between Hillsboro Inlet to the north and Port Everglades to the south.
Status: Construction operations began for the Broward County Shore Protection Project (SPP) when Eastman Aggregate Enterprises, LLC of Lake Worth, Fla. started delivering sand to the beach Nov. 4. Work began about 2,000 feet south of Hillsboro Inlet, Pompano Beach and will progress 5.1 miles southward to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Crews are placing approximately 115,000 cubic-yards of beach quality sand at an estimated cost of $7.1 million. Workers are trucking the beach renourishment sand from the E.R Jahan Ortona sand mine located in Moore Haven, Fla., southwest of Lake Okeechobee. Sand placement is expected to occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some work occurring on Saturdays. The project completion date is scheduled for January 2014, though the contract allows work through the end of April. Turtle nesting limitations, potential bad weather delays or equipment down time could take the contract beyond the estimated January completion.
Authority: Section 103 of Public Law 89‐298, Oct. 27, 1965, authorizes the entire SPP.
Congressional Interests: Representatives Lois Frankel (D) and Debbie Wasserman (D) and Senator Bill Nelson
