Wetlands Wednesday: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helps protect the nation's valuable wetlands by regulating a section of The Clean Water Act dealing with placing fill material into waterways. Regulatory specialists look for three primary indicators -- hydrology, soil conditions and vegetation -- to help them delineate a wetlands. Biologist Bob Morningstar with the Detroit District talks about evaluating wetland vegetation. If you're planning work on your property, please check in with the Army Corps and state and local environmental agencies to ensure you're not harming aquatic ecosystems. It may be "Black Friday" across the U.S., but we prefer #freighterFriday here at the Soo Locks. Here is a time lapse clip of the John B. Aird leaving the MacArthur Lock this morning.

We wanted to share these graphs from 1925 for today's #ThrowbackThursday. The first shows a comparison of tonnage handled in ports and waterways around the world. The second shows the cost per ton for cargo transport on U.S. waterways. The Soo Locks, has been and continues to be an important and efficient part of our transportation system.

#WetlandWednesday Emergent wetlands are very important as almost all fish species in Lake St. Clair rely on this habitat type at some point during their life cycle, therefore, the Detroit District is designing a project at the mouth of the Clinton River on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The goal of the project is to improve fish and wildlife habitat at the Harley Ensign site.

LTC Sugrue and other Detroit District Team Members met with the Michigan State University (MSU) Dean of Engineering, Dr. Leo Kempel, to establish a stronger relationship between the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District and MSU.
The meeting focused on developing a program that benefits both the University and the Corps by exposing engineering students and professors to real life engineering problems and creating a potential pathway for students that are interested in civil and environmental engineering solutions.
Future opportunities may include support with senior capstone design, "mini-sabbatical" rotations for MSU faculty, and student co-ops through the MSU's Live, Work, Detroit! established program.

#DYK While working for the Corps you can volunteer to serve on different missions all over the world? Detroit District's, Joe Lamus, did just that by serving this past year as a Technical Monitor in support of FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency's housing mission in Louisiana. When asked about his experience, Lamus said, "being part of this mission has brought me great satisfaction knowing I was an active part of a large team providing much needed relief to our fellow Americans in their time of need." #buildingstrongandtakingcareofpeople
