Soil, Air, and Water

Soil, Water, and Air are the basic natural resources critical to all fish and wildlife habitats and all vegetative communities. The BLM promotes healthy landscapes by protecting, maintaining, and improving the quality of soil, water and air resources on public lands in partnership with communities and stakeholders.

The Soil, Water, and Air Program integrates soil, water and air information with other disciplines, such as forestry and wildlife, to support the BLM’s multiple use and sustained yield mission. This approach, referred to as the “landscape” or “watershed approach,” enables the program to work with diverse partners in a variety of communities in the 12 western states.

The BLM’s Soil, Water, and Air Program established 5-year strategies for all three program elements to support BLM professionals in managing ecological resources on public lands. Themes common to the strategies include:

  • Integrating conservation and sustainable-use principles in soil, water, and air activities and natural resource planning efforts.
  • Engaging and collaborating with other programs, partners, agencies, and stakeholders on landscape-scale restoration efforts.
  • Making soil, water, and air resources knowledge and expertise accessible throughout the BLM by providing access to information and training.
