As a federal agency, NICHD is required to receive advice from various advisory committees, task forces, boards, and commissions to help the institute achieve its goals. Advice from these entities is guided by the Federal Advisory Committee Act (Public Law 92-463) and must be both objective and accessible to the public.
The following are groups that advise the NICHD Director on matters related to research and research support activities and functions .

Board of Scientific Counselors
This group advises the NICHD Scientific Director, the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), and the Division of Intramural Population Health Research (DIPHR) on matters related to in-house research activities . -
National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council
This group is charged with advising, consulting with, and making recommendations to the NICHD Director on matters related to the research activities and functions of the institute. -
National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research
This group advises the NIH Director, the NICHD Director, and the director of NICHD’s National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) on matters and policies related to NCMRR activities.
