Urban Forest Inventory and Analysis - Urban FIA protocols will be used to produce design-based estimates of the quantity, health, composition, and benefits of urban trees and forests.
For nearly 80 years, the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program has established baselines, tracked change, quantified threats, demonstrated management effectiveness, prioritized research efforts, and helped people understand our region’s natural resources and the policies, practices, and processes that impact them.
Data collected and analyzed by FIA staff in the 20-state Northern Research Station region as well as in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas are used every day to assess sustainability, to make important business decisions, to evaluate wildlife habitat, and to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of the century.
