Chattanooga Tennessee River Streambank Stabilization Project
US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS BUILDING STRONG®
AUTHORIZATION: Section 14 of the Flood Control Act of 1946 (PL 79-526), as amended.
TYPE OF PROJECT: Streambank Stabilization.
LOCATION: City of Chattanooga, TN
CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Fleischmann (TN03), Alexander (TN), Corker (TN)
NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: City of Chattanooga, TN
BACKGROUND: Bank erosion is threatening to undermine approximately 1,200 feet of publicly owned 42-inch sanitary sewer main. In some sections it is within 5 feet from the bank. The project will utilize riprap to stabilize the eroding bank and provide protection for the endangered utilities.
IMPORTANCE: The sanitary sewer line services one-third of the City of Chattanooga and its failure would cause an immense financial burden to the city. Sewer line failure would also have disastrous consequences to the environment. There is a mussel sanctuary located in the immediate project area. Downstream of the project site there is a 42-inch water intake for the Tennessee American Water utility company that would be adversely affected.
STATUS: The project is in construction phase.
