The Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Brown
County, Wisconsin have partnered to re-create the Cat Island Chain in Green
Bay. The resulting structure provides a home for an estimated thirty plus years
of maintenance dredging for the outer Federal channels. The project serves a
critical purpose for navigation, while providing environmental benefits by
establishing 274 acres of habitat for wildlife, and restoring Pete’s Marsh and
Duck Creek Delta Wetlands providing an additional 1,440 acres of wetland
habitat. This cost shared $17.8 million project was the winner of the
Environmental Merit Award under the 2014 Chief of Engineers Award of Excellence
Program.
