President Rutherford Hayes‘s inauguration took place two days after the tumultuous disputed election of 1876 was settled. Here, Hayes is shown taking the oath of office, administered by Chief Justice Morrison Waite on the East Front of the Capitol. Outgoing President Ulysses S. Grant is seated at the far left. The Harper’s Weekly article describing the event estimated that 30,000 people were in attendance.
