  • Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus speaks with Sailors during a Thanksgiving day all-hands call aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Its culinary specialists prepared more than 4,950 pounds of turkey, 1,050 pounds of ham, 1,200 pounds of beef tenderloin, 648 pounds of shrimp cocktail, 7,000 portions of mashed potatoes, 400 pies and 200 cheesecakes for the ship's Thanksgiving meal. The ship and its carrier strike group are deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.   • Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Ray Mabus speaks during a ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C. During the ceremony, Mabus announced that the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 121, will be named the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., in honor of the Marine Corps lieutenant general who was the first African-American Marine Corps aviator and Marine Corps general officer. Petersen was the first African-American Marine Corps aviator and general officer. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1988 after 38 years of service. Mabus also awarded MCAS Cherry Point with a certificate of achievement for its Blue level of achievement in the Fiscal Year 2016 SecNav Energy and Water Management Awards, for a well-rounded energy or water program. SECNAV Presents High-Level Awards to Naval Special Warfare Commands

On Jan. 13, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus presented eight Navy Crosses and eight Silver Stars to active-duty and former members of East and West Coast Naval Special Warfare Commands at a ceremony in Virginia Beach, Virginia. One Navy Cross and one Silver Star were presented posthumously.
