Fourth-grader Marshall Little and his mother Rachel Little visited the Memphis District Corps of Engineers District last week to do research for a school report assignment on heroes and villains. Marshall chose to do his report on local hero Tom Lee. Lee became a national hero in 1925 when he pulled 32 people from the raging Mississippi River waters after the steamer M.E. Norman overturned near Memphis.
Public Affairs chief, Jim Pogue, hosted the visit. Marshall reviewed the contents of a time capsule that contained some items about the M.E. Norman, news articles about the incident, a model of the M.E. Norman and other items from the time of the incident.
You can learn more about Tom Lee and the M.E. Norman here: http://memphismagazine.com/features/tom-lee-a-heros-tale/
Good luck to Marshall. We wish him the best on his report!

#armyhistory This Day in Army History: The Battle of Cowpens in 1781. After successive British victories in South Carolina in 1780, American Commander, Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, moved 1,000 troops inland hoping to split the British forces and attack a remote British outpost. The two sides met on a pastureland called The Cowpens. Morgan instructed his militia to fire two rounds and reposition. Believing the Americans were retreating in a rout, the British commander Tarleton moved his forces forward only to encounter concentrated musket fire and a cavalry charge. British forces were decimated with 800 men killed, wounded or captured. The Americans suffered only 100 casualties. The battle provided a much needed morale boost that began a path of victories that culminated with the victorious campaign at Yorktown.

Detroit District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Team Members met with the Michigan State University (MSU) Dean of Engineering, Dr. Leo Kempel, to establish a stronger relationship between the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District and MSU.
The meeting focused on developing a program that benefits both the University and the Corps by exposing engineering students and professors to real life engineering problems and creating a potential pathway for students that are interested in civil and environmental engineering solutions.
Future opportunities may include support with senior capstone design, "mini-sabbatical" rotations for MSU faculty, and student co-ops through the MSU's Live, Work, Detroit! established program.

One way to amplify STEM interest among military children is through the National Math and Science Initiative's College Readiness Program.

That bridge blockade is an economic sanction to punish Standing Rock for standing up, punitive measures to force Native people back into 2nd class citizenhood, to turn tribal & state public opinion against the water protectors & its working. This is why we are kept poor, in tutelage. They can manipulate by withholding rations. The chains are there if you look. This is about more than a pipeline.
