Talking Freight Seminars
The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Office of Freight Management and Operations and the Office of Planning host the "Talking Freight" seminars. The seminars are part of a broader Freight Professional Development Program aimed at providing technical assistance, training, tools, and information to help the freight and planning workforce meet the transportation challenges of tomorrow. Seminars are held via web conference on a monthly basis throughout the year and are open at no cost to all interested parties in both the public and private sectors. There is no special equipment required to participate, all that is needed is a computer with Internet connectivity to view the presentations and audio can either be heard over the computer or phone.
Register for Upcoming Seminars
To register for a seminar, select the seminar topic in the table below. You will be taken to a registration form on the National Highway Institute Web site. You must register individually for each seminar in which you are interested. When registering you will be asked to enter your name, organization, phone number, and email address. This information will only be used to keep track of seminar participation and will not be shared with others. Please make sure you enter your email address correctly, as you will be sent login information via email. If you register for a seminar and later find out you can no longer attend, please inform Nicole Coene (Leidos) via e-mail at nicole.l.coene@leidos.com.
Talking Freight seminars may be eligible for 1.5 AICP Certification Maintenance Credits. In order to receive credit, you must attend the full seminar and login to the seminar with your full name or type your full name into the chat area during the seminar if you are in a room with a group of people. Truck Parking Issues and Initiatives |
Truck parking is one of the biggest issues currently facing the trucking industry. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) released its most recent "Critical Issues in the Trucking Industry" survey in October 2016, and found that truck parking availability ranks as the 4th highest (or depending how one wants to interpret the results, 3rd highest) priority issue within the industry. To address the issue, both the trucking industry itself and public sector governments are taking steps to find ways to improve truck parking availability. FHWA examined truck parking issues as part of its Jason's Law Truck Parking Survey released in 2015, and in response to the survey's results created the National Coalition on Truck Parking, a working group of public and private sector stakeholders committed to addressing truck parking needs. Various state Departments of Transportation are also taking steps to address truck parking needs in their states. With truck volumes continuing to grow as consumer and business product demand increases, addressing truck parking issues will remain a critical need for trucking industry-focused public and private sector stakeholders.

National Coalition on Truck Parking Overview
This presentation will provide a brief overview of the National Coalition on Truck Parking's structure and activities since it was formed in late 2015.

ATRI Truck Parking Case Study Overview
This presentation will examine the findings of the recently-completed, American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) Case Study research, in which various truck drivers kept diaries over a two week period to document the challenges they had in finding truck parking.

Information about the Talking Freight Seminar Series, including upcoming topics and registration availability, is distributed through the Freight Planning LISTSERV. The LISTSERV also provides a venue for exchanging information about freight planning among public and private sector professionals. There are over 800 subscribers, comprised of transportation professionals from State DOTs, MPOs, professional associations, businesses, the academic community, and others.
