What We Do

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are the nation's pre-eminent source of high-quality, objective advice on science, engineering, and health matters. Most of our work is conducted through seven major program areas: Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, Earth and Life Studies, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Health and Medicine, Policy and Global Affairs, Transportation Research Board, and the Gulf Research Program.

Reports

Each year more than 6,000 of the world's foremost scientists, engineers, and health professionals volunteer their time to address some of society's toughest challenges by serving on the hundreds of study committees that are convened to answer specific sets of questions. Our peer-reviewed reports present the evidence-based consensus of these committees of experts.

Bringing Together Interested Parties

Throughout any given year, we convene hundreds of conferences, workshops, symposia, forums, roundtables, and other gatherings that attract the finest minds in academia and the public and private sectors. These venues for discussion and debate are essential for allowing the scientific process to unfold. Published proceedings chronicle the presentations and discussions that take place at these activities.

Journals and Periodicals

Our prestigious journals — Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, ILAR [Institute for Laboratory Animal Research] Journal, and Transportation Research Record — publish the latest scientific findings on a wide range of topics. We also produce a host of other magazines and publications that cover critical issues of science, technology, and health.

Across International Boundaries

Science, engineering, and medicine are truly international endeavors that bridge cultural differences. Learn more about our international partnerships, projects, and activities.

Education and Outreach

We are committed to making sure that every American is scientifically and technologically literate and able to make informed decisions. We offer a variety of opportunities from grade school to grad school and beyond that are designed to ensure lifelong learning, promote research across disciplines, and engage the public in a deeper understanding of science.

Recognizing Outstanding Achievement

Each year the Academies present a number of prestigious awards to encourage and reward exemplary professional achievements.
