Harley et al. performed an intervention study among Latina adolescents as part of the HERMOSA (Health and Environmental Research on Makeup of Salinas Adolescents) study. The girls were given replacement personal care products to use for 3 days, and their urine was tested for endocrine disruptors (benzophenone-3, triclosan, and parabens). The significant decrease in levels suggested that replacing personal care products may lower one’s body burden of these compounds. (See also the related Science Selection.)

Tinney et al. describe the chemical explosion at the West Fertilizer Company and especially the dangers of siting schools near such facilities, and recommend that states “should take a proactive role in promulgating state regulations that prohibit the siting of schools near facilities that store hazardous chemicals.” (See also the Brief Communication by Paulson et al. and the Review by Phenrat et al., featured below, for related research on schools and on a contaminated site, as well as the Science Selection.)
