DOE Research Objectives
As part of its science and national security missions, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) supports a broad spectrum of basic and applied research in science and engineering. This research is conducted at DOE National Laboratories and through extensive grants and contracts with universities and the private sector. Increasingly, high-performance computing is an integral part of many of these activities, which include vigorous programs in combustion, climate change, nuclear stockpile stewardship, materials sciences, resource recovery, health issues, fusion energy, DNA sequencing, and protein structures, among many others.

DOE CSGF Objective
Because of its continuing needs, DOE has a special interest in encouraging the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers who can lead the application of high-performance computing to problems in their disciplinary areas. The objective of the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship program is to encourage the training of computational scientists utilizing high performance computing by providing financial and other support to talented students who enter a period of study and research in computational science accompanied by practical work experience at DOE research facilities.

The program is administered for DOE by the Krell Institute (“KRELL”).
