Vital Statistics Rapid Release

The Vital Statistics Rapid Release program provides access to the timeliest vital statistics for public health surveillance, through 1) releases of Quarterly Provisional Estimates and 2) Special Reports based on a current flow of vital statistics data from state vital records offices. Using the provisional data, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) produces much more timely estimates of important health indicators for public health practitioners, researchers, and health policy-makers than would be possible using final annual data.

Mortality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of death rates for 2015 through the second quarter of 2016. Estimates are presented for each of the 15 leading causes of death plus estimates for deaths attributed to drug overdose, falls (for persons aged 65 and over), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, homicide, and firearms-related deaths. -
Natality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of selected reproductive indicators from birth data for 2014 through the second quarter of 2016. Estimates are presented for: general fertility rates, age-specific birth rates, total and low risk cesarean delivery rates, preterm birth rates and other gestational age categories. -
Infant Mortality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of infant mortality (deaths of infants under 1 year per 1,000 live births), neonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 0-27 days per 1,000 live births), postneonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 28 days through 11 months per 1,000 live births), and death rates for the five leading causes of infant death for 2014 through the fourth quarter of 2015. -
Special Reports
Special Reports are topical analyses on vital statistics surveillance issues, based on the current flow of vital statistics data from state vital records offices. These reports provide additional methodological information or in-depth analyses on a specific topic to help readers understand and interpret provisional mortality and natality data. -
State and National Provisional Counts
Monthly and 12 month-ending provisional counts of births, deaths and infant deaths are provided for the U.S., while monthly provisional counts of births and deaths are also provided by state of residence (50 states, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico). Provisional counts of births, deaths, and infant deaths are based on data received and processed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as of a specified date and may be updated during the course of a data year.
