Federal Navigation Channel Maintenance of Infrastructure and Stewardship

DESCRIPTION: The project provides for a channel, 10 feet deep, 150 feet wide, from deep water in Lower New York Bay to the entrance of the harbor in the vicinity of the present westerly end of Crooks Point, thence of same depth and width along the west side of the harbor.  Length of the channel is approximately 1.9 miles.  An anchorage area, 8 feet deep covers 138 acres inside the harbor.  The project is located on the south shore of Staten Island, Richmond County, New York. 

AUTHORIZATION:  The project was adopted in 1927 and modified in 1938.

STATUS:  The navigation channel was last maintenance dredged in Fiscal Year 2014, removing approximately 250,000 cubic yards of sand which was placed at the Historic Area Remediation Site (HARS) in the Atlantic Ocean.
