Navy Medicine World Class Care… Anytime, Anywhere
Richard Fogoros was recently recognized as Civilian Medical Logistician/Supply Technician of the Year for a shore-based facility. He manages Naval Hospital Bremerton’s (NHB) medical-surgical central supply replenishment and linen operations and three branch health clinics – BHC Bangor, Everett and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He also took over management duties and oversight of the entire medical warehouse operations in 2014, providing much needed continuity and teamwork for increased performance and productivity.
I’m from Warren, Michigan, Center Line High School, class of 1970. After graduating, I enlisted in the Army. During basic training I was selected as the Creighton Abrahams Honor Graduate. I subsequently performed as a 91B2F Flight Medic assigned to the 421st Medical Company, Air Ambulance, “Dustoff Europe.”
After leaving the military, I returned to college and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in management. Realizing how much I missed my association with patient care and the military, I pursued a career in medical logistics with the Veterans Administration and eventually the Department of the Navy.
My philosophy in life is to give the best I have to give, no matter what I do and in so doing I will have success in life.
During my military career, I learned that one can accomplish much more than he or she can imagine. My experience at NHB reinforces that ideal. It has allowed me to overcome many challenges that I thought were beyond my ability. 
During my tenure I’ve managed the sterile processing department for several years and ultimately became supervisor of central supply and linen and laundry contracting officer, eventually expanding to overseeing warehouse functions.
I mange operations within the framework established by healthcare affairs, via the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to maintain a strict ‘just in time’ supply pipeline necessary to reduce tax dollars associated with excess inventory. My department maintains ‘in stock’ rates substantially higher than the 90 percent threshold established by DLA.
I have had many exciting assignments at NHB. Among them medical product standardization implementation of forward deployed logistics, and most recently implementation of a time-saving and space-saving shelving system for supplies. While all of these projects have been rewarding, I believe my most exciting challenge is yet to come.
The best part of my career in Navy Medicine is the opportunity to make a difference. There’s never a dull moment.
