The crew of the USS Halsey was kind enough to take my grandfather-a "tin can" WWII destroyer veteran on a tour of their ship. These are the folks that allow Americans to live free.

USS HALSEY was up before the sun preparing to circumnavigate Ford Island; she was humbled and honored to be the flagship for today's remembrance ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor by Japan. USS HALSEY performed a Pass-In-Review, rendering honors to both the fallen victims from that fateful day and to those veterans who fought and lived to tell about the bravery and valor demonstrated by United States service members serving in Pearl Harbor, HI on this "date which will live in infamy."

USS HALSEY enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner onboard followed by an extended holiday weekend, then came back for a week of hard work. HALSEY completed the PRT, pinned a SWO, and reenlisted a sailor. Deck department walked through mooring to a bouy and continued exterior preservation. The entire ship contributed to more than 50 drills to certify in FSOM 1.3 and MOB-D 1.3B (First Aid and Damage Control). Finally, we gathered in Waikiki on Friday night for a Holiday Party!

USS Halsey frocked 33 sailors on Friday. Bravo Zulu to the newly promoted Petty Officers!

The Surface Navy Association’s (SNA) Pearl Harbor Chapter sponsored the 3rd Annual MustDash 5K Turkey Trot this Thanksgiving morning on Ford Island.

This week, a group of Halsey sailors went through NSFS (Navy Security Force Sentry) and SRF-B (Security Reaction Force-Basic) where they learned non-lethal take-down techniques and tactical maneuvering. Each student then employed these skills on a challenge course where he or she had to take down the Red Man after being sprayed with oleoresin capsicum (OC). These courses qualify sailors to stand armed watches and perform security force duties.
Back on the ship, sailors worked on maintaining the ship's exterior surface and training for MOB-D and MOB-E (damage control and engineering certifications). USS Halsey also conducted tours for our guests from the Philippine Navy. Lastly, a petty officer celebrated her reenlistment at the Missing Man Memorial.

USS HALSEY got underway last week for type commander sea trials. The crew worked tirelessly to complete a series of events intended to prove our ability to navigate and operate at sea; passing the checks determined that Halsey could advance further in the training cycle. After a tough week, the crew slowed down on Sunday for a fresh water washdown, some deep sea fishing, and a Steel Beach Picnic on the flight deck before returning home to Pearl Harbor.

While underway last week, USS HALSEY earned certification to conduct day and night helicopter operations at sea. MOB-A training and certification consists of multiple areas including program management, drills, and at sea deck landings by helicopters.

HALSEY Sailors had plenty of fun and worked extra hard this week. On Saturday, Sailors attended Rock The Troops and enjoyed performances by The Rock, Kevin Hart, Lynard Skynard, Flo Rida, and more. During the week, Sailors gained valuable professional development at the 2016 Hawaii Women's Joint Leadership Symposium as well as the 2016 Resilient Workforce Summit. Three officers earned their SWO pins, and the ship conducted certification training and drills for AVCERT and VBSS 2.3. Then, on Friday night, our First Class Petty Officers put on a Haunted Ship event for USS HALSEY friends and family!

Aloha, Friends and Family! On December 5, USS HALSEY will be going on a Family Day Cruise. This week, HALSEY Sailors toured the HSM 37's helicopter hangar and were given a walk-through of the SH-60R Seahawk. The HALSEY will embark this squadron for future underways, so the tour allowed the flight deck and fire fighting teams to get familiarized with the aircraft. The Boatswain's Mate team worked extremely hard to restore the flight deck nets and get USS HALSEY ready for flight ops. Sailors also conducted Damage Control drills, supply onloads, small boat navigation training for VBSS operations, as well as program certifications for 3-M and Explosive Safety.
