The Golden Eagle team was fortunate enough to host Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams as a guest on board CVN 70 during a recent underway. Mr. Williams is the last surviving recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Battle of Iwo Jima, and has recently been honored with being the namesake of the USNS Hershel "Woody" Williams, a Expeditionary Transfer Dock ship.

As the Medical Department Lead Surgical Technician, Seaman Leal has assisted in 15 surgical procedures and 20 surgical dressing changes, resulting in zero post-operative complications. His sterilization of 150 surgical instrument sets maintained a zero-percent surgical infection rate. He is a key member of the sick-call team, assisting in the triage and treatment of 728 Sailors, distribution of 240 over-the-counter medications, administering 120 immunizations, processing 15 laboratory specimens, and responding to four medical emergencies. He also managed 748 surgical line items worth $470,000 with 100 percent accountability. Seaman Leal is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.

As Combat Systems CS-5 divisional Repair Parts Petty Officer (RPPO), Petty Officer Newton aggressively processed four high priority casualty reports (CASREPS) for Ships Self Defense System (SSDS), Ship Gridlock System (SGS), Common Data Link Management System (CDLMS), and Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) on Ship (MOS). His efforts expedited the repair process of these systems in support of Deploying Group Systems Integration Testing (DGSIT) and Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX). Petty Officer Newton is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.

Seaman Carlson is one of Deck department’s most junior Sailors and always the first to volunteer to help with any rigging job, no matter the scope. In the short amount of time on board, he has proven to be a highly motivated Sailor who can do anything he puts his mind to. Hence, he has become a key player on every deck rigger evolution. He works with an excellent attitude and his demeanor motivates those around him. He also motivates his peers to go above and beyond the chain of command’s expectations every day. Seaman Carlson is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.

Petty Officer Harris is the Air Department forward and aft spotter in Primary Flight Control, responsible for assisting Air Boss and Mini Boss in tracking all aircraft launches and recoveries on board CARL VINSON. He is also currently training as a platform spotter to assist the Landing Signal Officer (LSO) in properly identifying aircraft prior to each recovery. Further, he is the divisional training petty officer for V-5 division. His work ethic and perseverance in Primary ...Flight Control has surpassed all expectations. He dedicates off-duty time to mentor, train and assist four personnel in their efforts to qualify as forward and aft spotter and Integrated Shipboard Information System (ISIS) operators. His efforts enhance Primary Flight Control mission readiness, resulting in the safe launch and recovery of 7,200 aircraft during CARL VINSON’s Fleet Readiness Training Plan. Petty Officer Harris is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.

As Global Command Control System Maritime Operator (GCCS-M), Petty Officer Mungiafontes manages a highly complex Common Operational Picture (COP) architecture, accurately managing a database of more than 2000 tracks, contributing to the overall success of CARL VINSON Strike Group during a demanding basic phase and fleet synthetic training evolution. Also while serving as Voyage Management System (VMS) plotter, she correctly plotted navigational fixes aiding the officer of the... deck, navigator, and navigation team in the safe navigation and passage during sea and anchor evolutions. Additionally, she aided in maintaining more than 75 critical contacts of interest providing an operational picture for 3rd and 7th Fleets. Petty Officer Mungiafontes is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.

Seaman Callum consistently demonstrates the highest standard of integrity, dedication and hard work. He efficiently coordinates the proper receipt, stowage and issue of more than 500 ship’s store merchandise items valued at over $1M. His efforts resulted in product sales in excess of $700K, which generated $105K in contributions to the Command MWR fund, thereby directly enhancing crew morale. He is a top performing multi-talented individual who has unlimited potential for inc...reased responsibility. He was hand-picked by his leadership to serve as the Bulk Storeroom Custodian, where he processed numerous daily issues of merchandise to two ship’s store outlets, the Chuckie V coffee outlet and 21 vending machines with 100% accountability. Seaman Callum is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day for Nov. 9.

Petty Officer Richardson is the Weapons Department G2 Work Center Supervisor/Safety Petty Officer. She is responsible for the accurate and efficient completion of preventative maintenance within her division, which encompasses 34 magazine sprinkler systems, 10 50-caliber machine gun mounts, 14 ready service lockers, four 25 millimeter MK38 chain guns, and 116 small arms weapons and support equipment. Petty Officer Richardson is commended on a job well done and is most deserving of being selected as the CARL VINSON Sailor of the Day.
