When to File for TPS

In order for you to maintain Temporary Protected Status (TPS), you must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that runs from May 16, 2016, through July 15, 2016. We encourage you to register as soon as possible within the 60-day re-registration period.

Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension

USCIS has automatically extended the validity of employment authorization documents (EADs) issued under the last extension of TPS for Nicaragua for an additional 6 months, through January 5, 2017. If you are a TPS beneficiary under the Nicaragua designation and your EAD is based on your TPS status with an original expiration date of July 5, 2016, your EAD is covered by this automatic extension.

To prove that you are authorized to continue working legally, you may show the following documentation to your employer and government agencies:

Your TPS-related EAD with a July 5, 2016 expiration date; and
A copy of the Federal Register notice announcing the automatic extension.

Your employer may rely on the Federal Register notice as evidence of the continuing validity of your EAD. Go to the Documentation Employers May Accept and Temporary Protected Status Beneficiaries May Present as Evidence of Employment Eligibility page for more information.

If USCIS approves your TPS re-registration application and you paid the fee for a new EAD (or USCIS approved your fee waiver request), you will be issued an EAD with the expiration date of January 5, 2018.

Online Accounts

Beginning May 16, if you file a TPS application under Nicaragua’s designation, you will be able to create a USCIS online account to track and manage your case online. After you submit a Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status, with an accompanying Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and/or Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, you will receive a USCIS Account Acceptance Notice in the mail with instructions on how to create your USCIS online account. USCIS will continue processing your application even if you choose not to access your online account. USCIS will also continue to send you copies of notifications about your case by mail through the U.S. Postal Service.

Having a USCIS online account allows you to:

Check the status of your case;
Receive notifications and case updates;
Respond to requests for evidence; and
Manage your contact information online, including updating your address.
