Data Collection: National Judicial Reporting Program (NJRP)

From 1986 to 2006 the National Judicial Reporting Program (NJRP) collected felony sentencing from a nationally representative stratified sample of state courts in 300 counties. The information collected included: age, race and gender of offenders; dates of arrest, conviction and sentencing data; mode of conviction and type of sentence imposed. Data were collected every 2 years during this time period.

| Methodology | |
For the majority of the locations, data are collected directly from the state courts. For the other locations, data are obtained from the counties. Sources of that data include sentencing commissions, statistical agencies, departments of public safety, probation departments, state police departments and departments of corrections. Indvidual level data were obtained either electronically or manually. Manual methods included photocopies of documents, questionnaires completed by court officials and on-site collections.
