Employment Opportunities at U.S. Embassy Beijing

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing is staffed by direct hire Americans assigned to the Embassy by their agencies in Washington, their Eligible Family Members and Members of Household, and Locally Employed Staff. 

The Human Resources Office advertises all positions on the embassy’s website.  If you are interested in applying for a position at Embassy Beijing, please read the information that follows to ensure that you understand our employment policies and the application procedures before submitting any application.

Who Can Apply for Employment?

All applicants must be legally eligible to work in China. Applicants must provide proof of legal eligibility in the form of an unrestricted residency permit, or in the case of Eligible Family Members (EFMs) and Members of Household (MOHs), a diplomatic “W” visa, at the time of application. The U.S. Embassy in Beijing does not sponsor work visas for employment applicants.

To be eligible for a job with the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, you must qualify as one of the following:

Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff):

Locally Employed Staff are individuals who are Chinese citizens with valid residency permits. LE Staff must have relevant documentation to legally reside and work for the U.S. Government in China.  LE Staff may only apply for positions open specifically to LE Staff.  They are not eligible to apply for positions open to EFMs or MOHs.

Eligible Family Member (EFM) or Member of Household (MOH):

To be eligible for employment as an EFM or MOH, you must have a spouse or direct family member employed at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. If you do not have a family member assigned to the U.S. Embassy Beijing, you are not eligible to apply for jobs open to EFMs and MOHs.

EFMs and MOHs must have a diplomatic “W” visa to be eligible for employment. They may apply for positions prior to their arrival in Beijing. Note that EFMs and MOHs are also eligible to apply for LE Staff positions if they meet all the required qualifications.
