Professional Exchanges

Every year, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China administer a variety of exchange programs, including the Fulbright Program, International Visitor Leadership Program, Study of the U.S. Institutes, Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship and the Voluntary Visitors Program.  These programs give participants an opportunity to obtain knowledge and develop skills in their fields of expertise and establish valuable contacts with U.S. colleagues. 

U.S.-China Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program was created in 1946 by Senator J. William Fulbright to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world. Administered in cooperation with the Chinese Ministry of Education, the U.S.-China Fulbright program supports two-way academic exchanges in the social sciences and humanities.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Humphrey Program brings accomplished professionals from developing countries to the U.S. at a mid-point in their careers for a year of non-degree graduate-level study and related practical experience.

International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)

Each year the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in China invite 100+ Chinese emerging leaders in government, politics, media, education, business, the environment and other fields to visit the United States for three weeks to meet professional counterparts and experience American society and culture firsthand.

IVLP On Demand

The IVLP On Demand Program provides Chinese visitors to the U.S. a focused program of professional appointments on topics of Mission interest. Visitors must fund their own international travel, but U.S. government funding is sometimes available to cover the costs of per diem and domestic travel.

Study of the U.S. Studies Institutes

Study of the U.S. Institutes are four-to-six-week intensive academic study programs held on U.S. campuses for small groups of participants from around the world. Topics include American civilization, American politics and political thought, contemporary American literature, foreign policy, national security, journalism and media, religious pluralism, secondary education, and developing student leaders.

Citizen Exchanges Program

Through grants to U.S. private, non-profit organizations, the Citizen Exchange Program supports professional, cultural and youth exchanges in specific thematic areas that contribute to increased bilateral understanding.
