Following National Pollinator Week (June 15-21, 2015) and rollout of the Pollinator Research Action Plan we highlight and share the importance of pollinators including bees, birds, butterflies and bats in providing key ecosystem services. Nearly one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on bees and other species for pollination, and native bees play an important role in both crop and native plant pollination. The USGS Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation (BISON), a resource hub of EcoINFORMA, provides access to more than 1.4 million species occurrence records for native bees (keystone pollinators), in addition to millions of records for other pollinator species and the plants that depend on them for pollination services in the U.S. and U.S. Territories. In addition to data from notable sources such as the USDA Bee Biology and Systematics Laboratory and the Illinois Natural History Survey, this collection of bee species occurrence data includes over 260 thousand records from the USGS PWRC – Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab, which also develops survey manuals, identification keys, and protocols useful in the study of wild bees.

To view a list of the individual datasets provided by Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation (BISON) (http://bison.usgs.ornl.gov) go to the Data Providers tab in the navigation menu of the BISON web portal. The provider ID and resource ID that are listed next to each provider and resource name can be used to retrieve data via the BISON APIs (http://bison.usgs.ornl.gov/#api). These data resources can also be accessed via the BISON web portal by going to the BISON home page and clicking on ‘Refine Your Search’ located on the top left side of the map. The ‘Refine Your Search’ window allows users to select data by provider and resource as well as other search parameters. The ‘USGS PWRC – Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab – US-CA-MX – Bees’ data resource is found under the ‘BISON’ provider, while the other datasets mentioned in the Pollinator Data from USGS and Partners update can be found under the ‘Illinois Natural History Survey’ and ‘USDA-ARS Bee Biology and Systematics Laboratory’ providers in the ‘Refine Your Search’ window of the BISON web portal.
