Pioneers in Marine and Fisheries Research at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory
The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) of the University of Southern Mississippi has a long history in marine and fisheries research. Many consider the Lab’s noted director, Gordon Gunter, as the father of fisheries science for the Gulf of Mexico who coined the term “Fertile Fisheries Crescent” to describe the highly productive region stretching from Mobile Bay to Sabine Pass on the Texas/Louisiana border and including the Mississippi Sound and surrounding waters. As several influential scientists from GCRL are retiring or nearing retirement we thought it might be a good time to chronicle their professional careers documenting their accomplishments and focusing on some of the important issues they encountered. We especially wanted to capture their thoughts and concerns over current issues in the marine and environmental sciences.
