How to Use the Map

Data on the map is based on the prime recipients' places of performance as reported by the federal agency. The map will display using IE9 or above, and all versions of Chrome and Firefox.

1. Input your ZIP CODE and select GO to see transactions in your neighborhood.

2. Choose two or more filters: a State and a County or a State and Agency and select GO. Choosing filters will either display a cluster with total number of transactions or different colored dots representing the places of performance for the transactions. The list of recipients to the right of the map will change depending on the filters you choose.

3. Click on a dot to see a POP UP box with the Recipient Name, the Amount of the Transaction, the Number of Transactions, the geographic location, and the Awarding Agency. Or click on the recipient to display the same POP UP box. Because there is so much data and because no street addresses are reported, dots may be stacked on top of each other so you may see multiple transactions in the POP UP box. Use the Next button to see the details about all the recipients in that one place of performance location.

4. Double click on a state to display clusters by Congressional Districts. Double click on the cluster to see the dots.

5. Use the Reset button to clear your filters.

6.  For details on a transaction, click on the Award ID to go to the Award Summary where you will find the transactions summarized and the sub-awards integrated into the prime award data.

7. To find data on foreign transactions, use the Advanced Data Search.

MAP FAQs

What is displayed on the map?
Contract, grant, loan, and other financial assistance transactions from October 1, 2008 to present (see Data Download for data prior to September 30, 2008) The data displayed represents prime recipients' places of performance zip codes+4 as reported by the agencies. The places of performance for contract transactions may not be the actual locations of projects but the locations where services or products were purchased or manufactured.

When is the data on the map updated? The data on the map is updated daily. Agencies are required to submit data files within 30 days after making an award or after making a modification/transaction to an award, except for the Department of Defense which delays its submission by 90 days to protect operations.

What do the clusters represent?
Because there is so much data to display, it is necessary at the state, county, and congressional district levels to collect the number of transactions into clusters. When you double click on a cluster, it will break apart into smaller clusters or dots representing the places of performances for specific transactions.

What do the dots represent?
Each dot represents a transaction, or in many instances, multiple transactions. The different colors represent the types of transactions: orange =  contracts; green = grants; blue = loans; and purple = other financial assistance.

How are the dots placed?
The dots are geocoded based on the places of performance zip codes+4 reported by the federal agencies. Because agencies are not required to report the street addresses for places of performance, there will be multiple dots displayed in the centers of the zip codes. Where there are multiple transactions in one location, the dots are stacked in the following order: Other Financial Assistance at the bottom, Loans, Grants, and Contracts on top.  If only a state code has been reported, the dot appears at the state capital. If only a county or congressional district has been reported, the dots are placed in the centers of those locations. If the transaction is statewide, the dot will appear at the state capital.

Why is the Recipient Name blank?
The Recipient Name will be blank if that field was left blank when the record was submitted by the agency.
