#OnThisDay in 1921, a fire in the basement of the U.S. Department of Commerce severely damaged most of the 1890 Census records. Some 1890 records survived, including those for parts of the District of Columbia and counties in 10 states as well as records from the 1890 Veterans Census, (like President Rutherford B.
