10 students worked in various departments ranging from Operations to Engineering and Construction in the District Office since January, gaining real-world experiences and applying skills they have learned in the classroom.
 
This is the 5th year that the District has hosted students from the Career Academy, bringing the total to 38 interns.
 
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District and the Clyde C. Miller Career Academy entered into an agreement for the purpose of encouraging and enhancing study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines for students and faculty at Clyde C. Miller Career Academy.

Volunteers from the St. Louis District hosted an interactive bridge building event where competitors tested their bridges to find the strongest based on its mass and the maximum weight load it could hold during the Science Olympiad Regional Tournament hosted by SIUE this weekend.

More than 450 STEM motivated students, grades 6-12, participated in the annual event. 

Reptiles, mammals, insects and more!  Kim Hammel, Park Ranger from Carlyle Lake spoke with students at St. Teresa’s Catholic School today, (in the school's new STEM Lab) about common critters found in Southern Illinois, and what it takes to be a park ranger. Striker, the prairie kingsnake made a special appearance today as well.

More than 150 students from Triad Middle School in Troy, Ill., visited the National Great Rivers Museum and the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in Alton, Ill., today. St. Louis District staff and volunteers as well as representatives from the Illinois Natural History Survey taught the 7th grade students about navigation and commerce, river training structures, competition among river fish, the mutually beneficial relationship between prairies and insects, and the predation dynamics of wetland macroinvertebrates.

St. Louis District staff and volunteers participated in Earth Day activities at the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City where visitors learned about wetlands, camping, water safety and more!

Students at St. Teresa's Catholic School in Belleville, Ill., became "Fish FINatics" when Erin Hilligoss-Volkmann, Natural Resource specialist with the St. Louis District's Rivers Project in West Alton, Mo., visited with them today.

The students learned about native Mississippi River fish and the different behaviors and adaptations that help them survive in their environment. Each student will also submit an original drawing of a fish for a chance to be featured in the 2016 Fish FINatics Field Guide of fish of the Mississippi River.

Today’s program is part of the year long outreach partnership between the St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the school. Each program focuses on the practical application of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). #STEM

Col. Anthony Mitchell, St. Louis District commander; James Gracey, Wappapello Lake Assistant Operations manager and Alex Harper, student intern from the Clyde C. Miller Academy represented the St. Louis District during the Mississippi River Commission public hearing this morning. The public hearing was held aboard the Mississippi Valley Division flagship, MV Mississippi, moored at the City Riverfront in Cairo, Ill. The MRC, headed up by its president, Mississippi Valley Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Michael C. Wehr, made its visit there to hear testimony about the Mississippi River and the Corps of Engineers work on it, from interested parties.

Col. Anthony Mitchell, commander of the St. Louis District and Mr. Michael Brown, principal of the Clyde C. Miller Career Academy signed a Memorandum of Understanding today which outlines the partnership between the St. Louis District and the Academy.

2016 marks the 5th year that the St. Louis District has placed student interns from Clyde C. Miller Career Academy in various departments ranging from Geotech to Internal Review in the District office.

The St. Louis District’s participation in this program fulfills the Corps’ responsibility to foster passion in tomorrow’s engineers while providing experiences and perspectives to students that are different from what they already know.  It is part of the overall support of studies in science, technology, engineering and math known as #STEM .

The Corps’ STEM mission is to build relationships between local students, communities, higher education and the Corps of Engineers to increase interest in STEM curriculum and career fields in order to build a diverse and capable future STEM workforce.

Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., visited technicians with the Veterans Curations Program lab in St. Louis, Mo., yesterday to learn more about their experience and how the program will help them reach their personal and professional goals.
