Veterans and Military Families

Each year, AmeriCorps and Senior Corps engage the talents of roughly 20,000 veterans in service and assist more than 450,000 veterans and military families. Our programs and members are committed to this mission and thank those who have served.

National Service Supports Military Families

AmeriCorps and Senior Corps assist community-based efforts to meet the unique needs of military families. Such services include mentorship and tutoring for military children, legal assistance, affordable housing, health care, counseling, and more.

Members also help veterans apply for and explore benefits options. Some AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs work in coordination with Wounded Warrior projects.

National Service Connects Veterans to Volunteer Opportunities

AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs recruit veterans, particularly those who are transitioning from military to civilian life, into service opportunities, including those that utilize military experience.

FY18 Highlights: AmeriCorps Programs Serving Veterans and Military Families

Not Forgotten Outreach

Not Forgotten Outreach (NFO) is dedicated to motivating active duty, reservist, National Guard, veterans, military families, and Gold Star families of fallen service members to participate in recreational and/or therapeutic activities in order to facilitate the healing process. In FY18, AmeriCorps NCCC provided the infrastructure necessary to sustain NFO through Veterans Corps, prepared soil for future growing seasons, built greenhouses and animal pens, and completed the Veterans Memorial. AmeriCorps members also worked alongside veterans to care for soil that will be used to provide food to local schools.

In FY18, NFO also hosted an event at Taos Ski Valley where roughly 3,000 miliary families attended, making it the largest recreational gathering of military families at a ski resort. NFO hosted two appreciation dinner for military families as part of the event.

Department of Veterans Affairs - Golden Age Games

The National Veterans Golden Age Games (NVGAG) is the premier senior adaptive rehabilitation program in the United States, presented each year by the Department of Veterans Affairs and co-sponsored by the Veterans Canteen Service. In FY18, the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) hosted nearly 1,000 Veterans ages 55 and over, their coaches, and supporters representing VA medical facilities nationwide for the 32nd Annual NVGAG. Sports and fitness are vital ingredients of VA’s National Rehabilitation Special Events; physical activity and friendly competition engage the mind as well as the body, and recreation therapy fills a special need in the lives of older patients at VA health centers across the country.

AmeriCorps assisted with site set-up, tear down, and transportation assistance for participants, for 10 days. The member worked with the NMVAHCS logistics lead to prepare the NM Convention Center and other venues for events such as air rifle, badminton, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, and several exhibition events.
