Unemployment rate and employment-population ratio vary by race and ethnicity

Labor market outcomes in the United States vary considerably across race and ethnicity groups. In 2016, for example, the overall civilian unemployment rate was 4.9 percent, while the rates for the major race and ethnicity groups ranged from 3.6 percent for Asians to 8.4 percent for Blacks or African Americans; the rates for Whites was 4.3 percent in 2016, and the rate for Hispanics or Latinos was 5.8 percent.

Over 1 million health care and social assistance job openings on last business day of November 2016
On the last business day of November 2016, there were 1,033,000 job openings in the health care and social assistance industry, yet there were only 566,000 hires in this industry over the month. Despite accounting for 21 percent of the 4,972,000 private industry job openings recorded at the end of the month, health care and social assistance accounted for just 12 percent of total private industry hires during the month.

Logging workers had highest rate of fatal work injuries in 2015
A total of 4,836 fatal work injuries were recorded in the United States in 2015, for an all-work fatal injury rate of 3.4 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Transportation and material moving occupations recorded fewer fatal injuries in 2015 than in 2014, but still accounted for over one-fourth of all fatal work injuries in 2015. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers incurred 745 fatal work injuries in 2015, the most of any occupation.

Unemployment rate down 0.3 percentage point over the year ended December 2016
Over the year ended December 2016, the unemployment rate declined 0.3 percentage point, from 5.0 percent to 4.7 percent. The unemployment rates for adult men (4.4 percent) and adult women (4.3 percent) were lower than the unemployment rate for teenagers (14.7 percent) in December 2016.
