Passenger Innovation Awards 2016

​​The 2016 Passenger Innovation Awards contest is now closed. Stay tuned for 2017.

The Passenger Innovation Awards is an initiative that aims to ignite new ideas in the passenger world. Finalists win cash awards, but also have a unique opportunity to attend the IATA World Passenger Symposium, network and present their ideas on stage to all the delegates. 

2016 Winners

The 2016 finalists presented their ideas at the 2016 WPS in Dubai. The audience and the jury combined, voted for the following winners:.

(1s​t Place) UP: A mobile technology that helps travel retailers, such as hotels, airlines and online travel agencies to sell upgrades and extras to their services, to their travelling passengers.

 (2nd Place) eTag and TagX Data Exchange: A dual sided electronic bag tag, and associated back office system- providing tag validation for tags supplied by any manufacturer, together with departure control system connectivity.

 (3rd Place) ​Travacoin: A Blockchain-based crypto-currency to facilitate payments between passengers and airlines.

2016 Contest Guidelines

The ideas should achieve at least one of the following:

  • Improve the air passenger experience
  • Simplify the air travel processes
  • Decrease costs incurred by airlines and others across the air travel supply chain
  • Enable ancillary revenues

In one of the following areas:

  • Identity management of air passengers
  • Baggage handling process
  • Payment process and methods 

2016 Submissions

​A high number of great ideas were submitted. The members of the Jury assessed the ideas and selected the 3 finalists. On 20 September the finalist were announced and invited to present their idea on stage on the third day at the World Passenger Symposium (WPS). The members of the Jury and the audience voted and chose the winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), followed by a ceremony.

Do I need to have a company to submit an idea?

No, any business idea would be considered.

Is there a cost associated with participation to this contest?

No, participation is free of charge.

Can I submit more than 1 business idea?

Yes, you can submit as many business ideas as you want.

In case of a team, do we need to submit individually?

No, you do not need to submit individually- you can submit your idea once as a team.

If my idea is a product already on the market, can I still submit it?

The contest is about new ideas, so ideally, the idea should not be a product that is already in the market. If it is in market, it would have to be at the very early stages. Mature products that have already been implemented are out of scope.

Will there be an Innovation Contest in 2017?
