The following are some of the recent research projects conducted on Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.  

• Dr. Tim Brush and assistants: Site Selection and Nesting Habitat of Golden-Fronted Woodpeckers; researching the Common Yellowthroat in an attempt to identify/distinguish amongst subspecies 
• Dr. John C. Abbot and assistants: Conducting sampling and surveys for adult and larval Odonata (Dragonflies and Damselflies) in an attempt to identify and classify new species records and species new to science.
• Texas Lepidoptera Survey (Primary Permit Holder Ed Knudson): Conducting sampling and surveys for adult butterflies and caterpillars in an attempt to identify and classify news species records and species new to science.
• Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Unit (OSU, Primary Permit holder: Richard Dolman): Conducting a Ph.D dissertation research project on "Habitat Fragmentation and Corridors in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Refuges: A Landscape Perspective."
