Where is it?  We are located at 3325 Green Jay Road, Alamo, Texas, 78516. Take Highway 83 to Alamo, Texas. Turn south onto FM 907 (Alamo Road) and continue until the end (7.5 miles). At Highway 281 (Old Military Highway) turn left and continue for about one quarter of a mile. The refuge is on the south side of the highway.

When was it established?  In 1943. It is the oldest public nature site in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

How big is it?  2,088 acres. 

Why is it here?  The refuge was originally established as a migratory bird sanctuary. It protects hundreds of plant and animal species that attract visitors from around the world.

Can I ride my bike?  Bicycles are not currently allowed on any part of the refuge.

Are pets allowed?  Pets are allowed from the parking lot to the headquarters pond area near the fee booth upon entry. They must be kept on a leash at all times.

Can I bring and release wildlife on the refuge?  Releasing any animal (wildlife or unwanted pets) on the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is illegal and subject to a fine.

Did you know?  In 1967 Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge was designated a Registered National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Park Service "because of its exceptional value in illustrating the natural history of the United States of America." It was one of the first federal areas to be given this prestigious recognition.
