Navy to Add iPhone and Android options for Mobile Users —The Naval Enterprise Networks (NEN) program office (PMW-205) expects to provide current approved mobile cellular device users with the option of utilizing iOS and Android devices by the end of 2014. So far, DISA-approved devices include iPhone 5c and 5s, the iPad Air, and Samsung Galaxy S4; other devices will be added after they are certified for use on the network by DISA and the Navy accreditation authority.
CNO speaks at Sea Service Diversity Conference — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert spoke Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the Association of Naval Services Officers (ANSO) Eastern Region Symposium at Fort Belvoir Officers' Club. The theme for this year’s three-day conference was "Education, Take a Step Forward!" Approximately 125 sea-based armed services members, officers, enlisted, active reserve and retired participated in the conference.
Navy and Marine Corps take home half of the Department of Defense's 2013 Fire and Emergency Services Awards — Navy and Marine Corps firefighters and fire and emergency services departments took home six of the twelve Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services of the Year awards for 2013. Presented by the Secretary of Defense, the Department of Defense's Annual Fire and Emergency Services Awards recognize DOD firefighters and fire and emergency services departments that “go above and beyond the call of duty.”
Wounded Warriors Arrive in London for the Invictus Games — Twenty-two Invictus Game contenders, including wounded warrior athletes from both Navy and Coast Guard, along with family, friends, U.S. teammates, and competitors from other nations, attended a welcome reception Sept. 9 at U.S. Ambassador Matthew Barzun's residence in Regent's Park in London. The opening ceremony for the Invictus Games took place Sept. 10 in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, kicking off four days of adaptive athletics competitions.
USNA Glee Club Performs at NFL Monday Night Opener — On Sept. 8, the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Men's and Women's Glee Club — featuring more than 50 midshipmen – performed during the opening ceremonies of the first Monday Night Football game of the 2014 National Football League. The event took place in Detroit, Michigan at Ford Field.
Navy integrates ‘common’ software into next-generation unmanned carrier-based system — In early September, NAVAIR engineers installed new software for the Navy’s Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) system’s control station at the program’s Naval Air Station Patuxent River lab; the software is the first to provide an unmanned command and control capability using the latest Navy Interoperability Profile (NIOP) standards.
Navy Oceanography Signs Three-Year Agreement with Geographic Software Leader Esri — On Sept. 3, Commander of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NAVMETOCCOM) Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Environmental Systems Research Institute Inc. (Esri), the geographic information systems company. Together with Navy oceanographers, Esri's Defense Solutions Team will cooperate on 10 objectives that will improve Esri's commercial off-the-shelf systems while also serving to improve geospatial reasoning in the oceans in support of naval warfare.
Ready Now, Anytime, Anywhere — President Barack Obama designated the month of September as National Preparedness Month, to culminate in a "day of action" on Sept. 30. On the day of action, the president has issue a challenge, asking that we all take time to prepare for specific disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) has launched an Emergency Preparedness campaign under the motto "Navy Ready" in support of this initiative.
