Navy Announces 2015 Stockdale Award Winners — The Navy announced the 2015 Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award winners. The award was established in honor of Vice Adm. Stockdale whose distinguished naval career symbolized the highest standards of excellence in both personal conduct and leadership. It is presented annually to two commissioned officers on active duty in the grade of commander or below who are serving in command of a single unit and who serve as examples of excellence in leadership and conspicuous contribution to the improvement of leadership in the Navy.

Secretary of the Navy Names Littoral Combat Ship — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced Aug. 19 that the next Independence variant Littoral Combat Ship will be named USS Oakland (LCS 24). The ship will be named to honor the long-standing history its namesake city has had with the Navy.

Ethics Symposium Punctuates Beginning of Naval War College Academic Year — The academic year at U.S. Naval War College (NWC) began with several events, Aug. 17, including the Ethics Symposium which aimed to instill an ethical base for incoming students. The emphasis on ethics is part of the Chief of Naval Operation's strategy for developing Navy leaders, outlined in his Navy Leader Development Strategy document, published in 2013.

CNO Visits Three Carriers — Members of the "Cooks From the Valley" organization treated USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), USS George Washington (CVN 73), and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) Sailors to more than 12,000 fresh, New York steaks, Aug. 17, aboard Naval Base Coronado (NBC). Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert also attended the picnic with Sailors from the three commands.

By the Numbers: Navy Signs Agreement for Largest Purchase of Renewable Energy by Federal Entity — The Department of the Navy, Western Area Power Administration (Western), and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power hosted a ceremony, Aug. 20, commemorating an agreement to construct a 210 megawatt (MW) direct current solar facility to benefit 14 DON installations in California. The agreement, signed last month, is the largest purchase of renewable energy ever made by a federal entity.

Naval War College Education: A 'Strategic Investment' For Future Navy — The 2015-2016 academic year kicked-off for 436 joint service and international students during a convocation ceremony at U.S. Naval War College (NWC), Aug. 17. During the ceremony, Adm. Michael S. Rogers, commander, U.S. Cyber Command, director, National Security Agency, and chief, Central Security Service, and Rear Adm. P. Gardner Howe III, president, NWC addressed the students.

Remembering the "Spirit of '45" — The Hampton Roads Naval Museum hosted a wreath-laying ceremony Aug. 15 in remembrance of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The ceremony was part of the "Spirit of '45" commemoration, enacted by Congress in 2010 to honor the brave men and women who served during World War II.

FAB LAB Tests New 3D Printed Throat Guard — Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center's (MARMC) Fab Lab is in the final stages of testing a new 3D printed throat guard for Navy garbage grinders.

SERMC Leads Last Frigate into Decommissioning — When USS Simpson (FFG 56) decommissions at the end of September, the U.S. Navy will be left with only one active frigate on the books. Simpson, the last active Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, is being prepared for inactivation as she takes a sabbatical from active service prior to being sold through the State Department's foreign military sales (FMS) program.

HSC-7 Fires New Weapon System for the First Time — The "Dusty Dogs" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 became the first helicopter squadron in the Northeast to fire an HSC Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) from an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter during a live-fire exercise Aug. 17. The exercise marked the start of the HSC-7 work-up cycle in preparation for deployment in the 5th Fleet area of operation with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10.
