CNO and MCPON talk Leadership — During a trip to the Pacific Northwest region, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens took part in an Aug. 6 interview with Mass Communication Specialist Second Class Fred Gray to discuss leadership. "Conversation with a Shipmate" is a series of informal discussions, each with a different focus, in which Greenert and/or Stevens have the opportunity to address concerns of Sailors throughout the fleet.
Dr. Igor Medintz Honored with 2013 Arthur S. Flemming Award — Research biologist Dr. Igor Medintz was recently awarded the 2013 Arthur S. Flemming Award for Basic Science. Dr. Medintz, who works at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), was honored for his "vision and dedication as a research biologist which have established him as a world-recognized leader in the growing field of bionanotechnology." The Flemming Awards recognize the achievements of exceptional federal employees in categories such as applied science, engineering and mathematics, and research.
Hurricane Hunters, Naval Academy Team Up for Research —
From Aug. 5-10 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, a research team from the Naval Academy's Training and Research in Oceanic and Atmospheric Processes in Tropical Cyclones (TROPIC) internship program worked with the Air Force Reserve's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron Hurricane Hunters to collect data from Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Julio. The ongoing partnership, now in its fourth year, was put in place to help the National Hurricane Center increase the accuracy of hurricane forecasts.
Multilateral Exercise SEACAT 2014 begins in Singapore, Continues throughout Southeast Asia — On Aug. 11, the Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training (SEACAT) exercise began at the Republic of Singapore Navy's Multinational Operations and Exercises Center (MOEC). Officers from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States are participating in this year’s exercise, creating strategies to respond to shared maritime security issues such as piracy and smuggling.
US, Singapore Navies Wrap Up 20th CARAT Singapore — Aug. 8 saw the conclusion of the 20th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Singapore. Shore-based and at-sea training exercises were conducted during CARAT 2014, with emphasis placed on maritime security priorities and enhancement of interoperability among both navies. A ceremony was held at Changi Naval Base to mark the end of the exercise; Rear Adm. Charlie Williams, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet's Task Force 73, was guest speaker.
GUAMEX 2014 Commences in the Pacific — GUAMEX 2014 kicked off on Aug. 9. The multinational anti-submarine warfare exercise, which is taking place in the waters off Guam, is focused on increasing the interoperability capacity between nations with a Pacific presence — Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the U.S.
PANAMAX Participants Learn from One Another While Preparing to Defend the Panama Canal — PANAMAX 2014, an exercise focused on safeguarding the passage of traffic through the Panama Canal while still respecting national sovereignty, marked the halfway point of this year’s event on Aug. 11. PANAMAX is one of the largest maritime exercises in the world with about 1,200 multinational military personnel participating in Florida, Texas, Arizona and Virginia.
A Matter of 'Record': Navy's Patent Volume Surpasses Other Tech Agencies — In a report published last month by the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Association, the Navy found itself sitting pretty at no. 89 on the IP Record's Top 300 Organizations Granted U.S. Patents. The Navy increased its patent volume by 12 percent in 2013, with a total of 399 patents received. This ranking places the Navy above more than two-thirds of Fortune 500 corporations and government agencies.
NAVAIR partners with industry on 3-D printing, develop a roadmap for the future — On July 24, a team from Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) met with industry providers at the NAVAIR Additive Manufacturing (AM) Industry Day in Solomons, Maryland to create a roadmap for 3-D printing. The Additive Manufacturing Roadmap addresses both issues and goals in regards to the implementation of 3-D printing. NAVAIR is a leader in AM; their Air Vehicle Modification and Instrumentation (AVMI) group is currently using the technology in support of naval aircraft flight testing and prototyping projects.
