WASHINGTON - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) scientists and engineers showcased cutting-edge technologies and briefed military personnel, government employees and contractors attending the NSWCDD Briefing and Technical Demonstration held at Naval Sea System Command headquarters, Nov. 3.

The Navy Yard event featured briefs and demonstrations that included NSWCDD 101; cyber warfare engineering; chemical, biological and radiological defense; directed energy; hypervelocity projectile; electromagnetic railgun; battle management system; integrated training systems; human systems integration projected displays and augmented reality; and electric power.

Dahlgren scientists also demonstrated an In-house Laboratory Independent Research project called, "Electromagnetic Response of Stress-Grown Carbon Nanotubes," and the Navy Innovative Science and Engineering project, "Real-Time Integrated Sensor Suite."

WASHINGTON - Cameron Sorlie, technical lead for the Navy's Laser Weapon System (LaWS), discusses high energy technologies at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) Briefing and Technical Demonstration held at Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) headquarters, Nov. 3. "It's great to talk to NAVSEA leadership and provide additional details on the capabilities that the warfare labs provide," said Sorlie, a member of the LaWS engineering team that designed and developed the laser weapon system. The team installed and integrated LaWS aboard the deployed USS Ponce (AFSB(I) 15) while training the ship's Sailors on its operation. USS Ponce Sailors reported the weapon performed flawlessly, exceeding expectations for both reliability and maintainability, during June 2015 testing in the Arabian Gulf.

WASHINGTON - Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer Helmer Flores demonstrates how a shipboard Collective Protection System (CPS) filter housing works while briefing Rear Adm. Brian Antonio, program executive officer for the Littoral Combat Ships program, on the system and its capabilities during the NSWCDD Briefing and Technical Demonstration held at Naval Sea System Command headquarters, Nov. 3. NSWCDD chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) defense engineers designed the shipboard collective protection system to protect Sailors, critical operations, and equipment within selected areas of a ship, or zones, from CBR contamination when the ship is operating in a contaminated environment. Personnel in the protected zone do not need to wear protective clothing or masks which impose heat stress and can impact crew members' performance.
