USS Mississippi Welcomed as Newest Member of Pacific Submarine Force — The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS Mississippi (SSN 782) was welcomed to the Pearl Harbor waterfront at an aloha ceremony Nov. 25, as the newest submarine permanently assigned to Submarine Squadron 1 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The arrival of Mississippi makes her the 4th Virginia-class submarine to be home ported in Pearl Harbor, and one of 18 fast-attack submarines permanently homeported at the historic base.
George Washington Strike Group Maintains Security and Stability during 2014 Patrol — The George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GWCSG) arrived at its forward operating location of Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan upon completion of its 2014 patrol, Nov. 25. GWCSG conducted three major training exercises during this year's patrol.
Abraham Lincoln Makes the First Call — Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) conducted its first internal phone call using the Integrated Voice Network (IVN) since Lincoln's Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) Nov. 20. The space containing one of three nodes to operate the full system began its reconstruction back in 2012 when Lincoln first started the RCOH process.
CNO releases Navy's Position Report — The Navy's top leader released a detailed report Friday that highlights the U.S. Navy's progress toward its vision, plans and current goals. The Position Report: 2014 was posted to Navy's website and to the leadership page of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. Jonathan Greenert. The document reviews the Navy's progress over the last year in pursuing objectives laid out in the Sailing Directions and Navigation Plan 2015 - 2019.
Navy Wounded Warriors Participate in Recovery Events at the Pentagon — Ten seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors took part in Warrior Care Month events at the Pentagon Nov. 20, sharing their stories and demonstrating the healing power of art and sports therapies. Two Navy wounded warriors — Chief Logistics Specialist Averill Malone and Damage Controlman 1st Class Anthony Timbers — displayed their artwork and poetry at the inaugural Rehabilitation Expo. The event was attended by senior military leaders — including the Honorable Jessica L. Garfola Wright, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, and James Rodriguez, deputy assistant secretary of defense, Office of Warrior Care Policy — as well as Department of Defense employees.
