CNO Visits Italian Counterpart — On July 21, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert began a two day visit to Italy where he spent time with chief of the Italian navy Chief of Staff of the Italian navy, Adm. Giuseppe De Giorgi. During his stay, the CNO attended a welcoming ceremony and meetings at the Italian naval headquarters in Rome, as well as the Naval Forces Europe change of command ceremony.
NSWC Indian Head EOD Technology Division Exercise Provides Canine Explosive Detection Training — An exercise conducted as part of a cooperative research and development agreement between Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NSWC IHEODTD) and Charles County Maryland Sheriff's Office (CCSO) concluded on July 23. The event focused on canine homemade explosive detection training and provided a unique opportunity for CSCO to expand their current training. Additionally, working with CSCO gave NSWC IHEODTD access to canines that haven't been exposed to the same explosive materials as their military counterparts.
CNO's China Visit Builds Cooperation for Greater US, PLA Navy Relationship — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert traveled to the People's Republic of China (PRC) where he spent four days visiting with military leaders, fleet units and leaders of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA). The CNO’s most recent visit, hosted by Adm. Wu Shengli, commander in chief of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), marked the fourth major interaction between Greenert and Wu in the past year.
Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station creates 3-D model of submarine for emergency responders — A 3-D computer animation model of the interior of Virginia-class submarine USS Texas (SSN 775) was recently completed by a team of engineers from Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES), Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock. The model was generated to assist emergency response personnel navigate the ship during a flood or fire.
NAVSEA Receives Three Department of Defense Value Engineering Awards — Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) was recently announced as the winner of three fiscal year 2013 Department of Defense (DoD) Value Engineering Achievement Awards. The awards program provides an incentive for government and defense industry partners to improve the value of weapon systems and programs by promoting innovation and creativity.
Malabar 2014 Kicks Off — Naval forces from India, Japan and the United States are currently participating in Malabar 2014, a “high-end warfighting exercise” designed to advance multinational relationships and mutual security issues. The exercise will wrap up on July 30.
Southern Partnership Station 2014 Continues in Guatemala — Military Sealift Command Joint High-Speed Vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1) traveled from Belize to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala to continue Southern Partnership Station 2014 (SPS-JHSV 14). Sailors, Marines, soldiers and airmen that are part of adaptive force packages (AFPs) will spend five weeks working with host-nation partners to strengthen relationships and fortify joint interoperability in various areas including maritime security tactics, dive operations, and construction projects.
America Marines Help Combat Colombia IED Threat — Sailors and Marines assigned to the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force (SPMAGTF) South debarked the future USS America (LHA 6) to begin a three-day bilateral exercise with Colombian Marines, at the International Center for Amphibious Training located in Covenas, Colombia July 16. The engagement provided an opportunity for information exchanges and training with the partner nation of Colombia, enhancing interoperability and building on a partnership that fosters regional security in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility.
Navy Caps for Kids — The Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) runs Caps for Kids, an outreach program in which Sailors around the fleet deliver command ball caps to hospitalized children throughout America. Ball caps are donated by wardrooms, Chiefs Messes, First Class Associations and other organizations throughout the Navy.
EURAFSWA Sops Up Spill Drill — On June 26, an 87,000 gallon oil spill simulation concluded in Rota, Spain. The simulation, conducted by Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA), prepares team members to rapidly respond in hazardous situations.
