NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT RIVER, Md. – With the recent connection of geographically separated aviation training devices, the Navy is one step closer to delivering a central hub for distributed aviation training.
The prototype Navy Aviation Distributed Training Center (NADTC) demonstration in Orlando, Florida, on June 18 was designed by the Naval Aviation Training Systems Program Office (PMA-205) and Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division. They jointly scripted and executed two separate events demonstrating the Navy’s capability to connect multiple aviation training devices, or simulators, to a central node for dedicated Fleet Synthetic Training - Air (FST-A), or networked aviation training, events.
The first NADTC event connected a P-3C Orion training device from Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville to H-60R Seahawk training devices at both NAS Jacksonville and NAS North Island via the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE). The second event connected an E-2D Hawkeye training device from NAS Norfolk to F-18C Hornet training devices from NAS Oceana and NAS Lemoore.
“The demonstrations were conducted to highlight NADTC’s capability to provide a persistent distributed training center to support realistic, complex and integrated training for the Naval Aviation Enterprise,” said Capt. Craig Dorrans, PMA-205 program manager. “This type of connected training will save the Navy money by taking live training events and replicating them in the virtual environment.”
According to the NADTC scheduled timeline, the training center is planned to be completed in 2017. The NADTC will provide a centralized location for technical support, mission planning, opposing force management and brief/debrief capability before, during and after aviation training events. The NADTC’s focus is to provide daily training opportunities for naval aviation to elevate pilot and aircrew proficiency, and is part of the Naval Aviation Vision for 2025.
PMA-205 provides warfighters with advanced training systems specific to a wide array of aircraft, affording U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircrew and maintainers with the knowledge, skills and abilities that enable mission success.
