Recreation Opportunities in the Astoria, Oregon Area

The Coast Guard Sector Columbia River has a morale and recreation locker containing camping equipment, including one camp trailer. A morale and recreation locker is located at the Sector. Besides camping equipment, various other items are available. These items include a boats, kayaks, fresh and salt water fishing gear, and various sport equipment. Recreational equipment is available to all Coast Guardsmen in the area. There is a gym along with a weight room at the Coast Guard Air Station which are also available to all military personnel and their dependents while in the area.

The Astoria area offers great recreational alternatives for the outdoor enthusiast. Oregon has 227 state parks, 300 county parks, and 1 national park, which are considered to be some of the finest in the United States. Nearly all have shower facilities and restrooms. Many of the parks have electrical hookups. Travel trailers, pickup campers, and tent camping are all very popular in the area. Parks are scattered from the coastal beaches to the mountains and the choice of locations is virtually unlimited. Here is a description of many of the local parks including the newest Lewis and Clark National Park.

The angler has a wide choice for sport. Available species include Chinook and Silver Salmon, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout, Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, Warmouth, Sturgeon, and a wide variety of surf fish. Salmon fishing in the Northwest has a reputation of being the finest in the country.

Clamming is also a favorite pastime along the Oregon and southern Washington coast. The best clamming is done during a minus tide.

Hunting throughout Clatsop County is also excellent. The area is well known for its abundance of deer and elk. Duck, pheasant, quail, grouse, dove, goose, pigeon, and black brant hunting is available from early fall through midwinter. Mallard ducks can be taken at a number of Clatsop County lakes, rivers, and streams. Bow hunting is also popular throughout Northwest Oregon.

There are four golf courses in the area. The 18 hole course at Gearhart and the 9 hole course at Seaside and the Highlands are open to the public. The Astoria Golf and Country Club is private but offers guest privileges.

There are bowling alleys in Astoria and Gearhart. There are 2 movie theaters in Astoria and 1 in Seaside. There is an indoor swimming pool and aquatic center in Astoria. The Group/Air Station also participates in softball and basketball in the City League in Astoria.

There is an outdoor skate park several blocks from Coast Guard housing along with a basket ball court, horse shoe pits, soft and hardball fields, a playground and picnic areas.

You'll find many paved bike and walking trails such as those from Fort Clatsop to Fort Stevens State Parks on the Oregon side or those stretching from Long Beach to Cape Disappointment on the Washington side.
