Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) Kennewick is located on the Columbia river at staute mile 330.5 in South Eastern Washington. Kennewick is the largest of three cities (Tri-Cities) located within a 35 mile radius. Kennewick lies just east of Richland, home of the Hanford Nuclear reservation, and South of Pasco, one of the regions largest ports for farm produce.
The Tri-City area offers plenty of outdoor activities and is host to numerous winter events. Kennewick was the host for the goodwill hockey games in 1992/93. We are about 4 hours and 30 minutes East of Seattle and Portland. Spokane lies about 2 hours North. There are numerous secondary education facilities in the area that offer a number of degree programs and extension services from Washington State University (WSU). Shopping is never too far away. Kennewicks' Columbia Center has exploded in growth over the last few years and has become home to a number of major retail stores.
ANT Kennewick was established in January of 1992. Prior to that it was known as Station Kennewick. The Kennewick Coast Guard facility was first established in 1962 when the lamp lighter station at John Day Oregon required replacement. Kennewick seemed a more logical midway point in the area of responsibility for the upper Columbia, Snake River, Lake Roosevelt, Lakes Coeur d'Alene and Pend Oreille in Idaho and finally Fort Peck lake in Fort Peck Montanna.
The Coast Guard has had an interesting history in Kennewick. It used to be home to the 65ft buoy tender BLUEBERRY until 1975 when it was removed from service. Kennewick began a SAR/LE mission in the late 1970's and Kennewick has since only had non-standard small boats. Station Kennewick was first commanded by a Chief Warrant Officer (Bos'n) until 1983 when it was reduced to a 15 person Search and Rescue (SAR) unit. In the fall of 1987 Station Kennewick received official word that it was closing in the spring of 1988. The Station Kennewick facility was turned over to Reserve Group Columbia Basin as their primary facility. A little more than a year later in 1989 Station Kennewick was reopened as a 10 person SAR station and resumed operations from the old station building. One year later Reserve group Columbia Basin was disestablished. Station Kennewick personnel eventually took on ATON duties as their expertise grew and by 1992 the Coast Guard closed the doors to Station Kennewick and reopend as ANT Kennewick.
ANT Kennewick has primary responsibility for all fixed structures from Hood River Oregon to Richland Washington on the Columbia River and from the confluence of the Snake River up to Lewiston Idaho.
ANT Kennewick also maintains secondary responsibility for all other aids to navigation (ATON) from Hood River to Fort Peck Montana including Lake Roosevelt near Spokane, and Lakes Corde'lane and Pend Oriel in Idaho.
