Protecting the Pacific Northwest

Response Department

The Response Department serves in all three of the Coast Guard’s primary roles: to protect the sea, to protect those on the sea, and to protect Americans from threats delivered by sea,  within CG Sector Columbia River’s Area of Responsibility. This area covers the majority of the Pacific Northwest (OR/WA) coastline, over 25000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean and over 300 miles of the Columbia River. The Response Department is divided into two divisions and provides oversight to four boat stations.

·         The Incident Management Division protects the sea by responding to pollution and all hazard incidents and threats, holding responsible parties accountable for environmental damage and cleanup, and protecting living marine and natural resources.

·         The Enforcement Division serves to protects those on the sea by providing security to the Maritime Transportation System, improving safety of recreational boaters, and rescuing those in distress; and protects Americans from threats delivered by sea by enforcing laws and treaties, securing federally protected living marine resources, and ensuring the integrity of our maritime domain from illegal activity.
