Garden Tenders
Philadelphia is a city of community gardens. These vibrant spaces promote health and nutrition, improve local economies, and allow neighbors to come together for a common interest.
The PHS Garden Tenders is a training course for individuals interested in starting community gardens on vacant lots, in parks, around schools and churches, and many other locations.
PHS Garden Tenders program is open to groups, individuals, educators, and anyone interested in gardening with others. Participants gain hands-on gardening experience and learn how to establish successful, self-sustaining community gardens.
Introductory topics include finding a site for a community garden, recruiting and keeping volunteers, basic horticulture, assessing and finding resources in your neighborhood, planting and garden maintenance, and forming viable partnerships.
Additional gardening workshops help gardeners develop and advance their skills. The responsibility for creating and maintaining gardens belongs proprietarily to each group.
