Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment

  • Water sampling and analysis at Idaho National Lab

Idaho National Lab(INL) in partnership with the US Geological Service(USGS) sample, collect and analyze data in order to ensure that exposure to the public and the environment within and around the INL Complex are below the required authorized limits set by DOE.

  • Environmental Sampling at LLNL

Environmental monitoring during 2004 operations for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) indicates no adverse impact to public health or the environment. The latest findings for 2012 are presented in LLNL Annual SIte Environmental Report. Click the image for additional information.

  • Air Sampling at LANL

Continuous Air Monitoring (CAM) at Los Alamos National Lab (LANL), New Mexico. LANL collects in real time air measurements to determine that the site provides low emissions in air, in order to protect the Public and the Environment form work been conducted at LANL.

  • Soil Sampling at Oak Ridge National Lab

Environmental sampling is used to ensure compliance with remediation and risk goals at the Oak Ridge Reservation. The Environmental Sciences Division at ORNL performs basic research used as a basis for this work.

The Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, authorizes DOE to protect the health and safety of the public against radiation. It is the Department's objective to operate its facilities and conduct activities so that radiation exposures to members of the public and the environment are maintained as low as is reasonably achievable (ALARA), within limits established in DOE O 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment.

DOE Order 458.1 Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment, Change 3
DOE O 458.1 supersedes DOE Order 5400.5, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment. It establishes requirements to protect the public and the environment against undue risk from radiation associated with radiological activities conducted under the control of the Department of Energy (DOE) pursuant to the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended (AEA).

Policies, Standards and Guidance Related to Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment
DOE policies, standards and guidance that supports or helps implement DOE O 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment.

Training and Tools
Training, tools and aids related to radiation protection of the public and environment and radiation protection information.

Environmental Radiological Assistance Directory (ERAD)
The Environmental Radiological Assistance Directory or ERAD, developed by AU-22, serves as an assistance tool to the DOE complex for protection of the public and environment from radiation. The ERAD is a combination webinar/conference call, designed to provide DOE and its contractors a forum to share information, lessons-learned, best practices, emerging trends, compliance issues, etc. in support of radiological protection programs developed in accordance with DOE O 458.1.

Biota
There is increasing interest in protection of the environment against ionizing radiation. DOE developed the technical standard DOE-STD-1153-2002, A Graded Approach for Evaluating Radiation Doses to Aquatic and Terrestrial Biota, Jul 2002. The Standard provides a graded approach for evaluating radiation doses to aquatic and terrestrial biota.

Logo HPS Meeting 2014DOE Special Session Presentations of the 59th Health Physics Society Annual Meeting - 2014 During the 59th Health Physics Society (HPS) 2014 Annual Meeting, in Baltimore, MD a full day DOE special session was provided. All presentations were developed and presented by DOE Federal Staff or related DOE contractors involved in radiation protection within the DOE complex. From occupational radiological protection to radiological protection of the public and the environment from activities within DOE. Whether you had a chance to attend or if you could not get to the 2014 HPS annual meeting, for your convenience we have included the morning and afternoon presentations with their respective abstracts.

Moratorium and Suspension of the Release of Metals from DOE Sites
Documents related to the moratorium and suspension of the release of metals at DOE Sites

Interagency Committees and Working Groups
DOE is actively involved with other Federal agencies that have responsibilities for the radiation protection of the public and the environment. This site provides the different committees and working groups that DOE is involved with.

Operational Guidelines Task Group (OGT) Manual and other Radiological Emergency Resources
Provides information and resources concerning the development of Operational Guidelines as part of planning guidance for protection and recovery following Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD) and/or Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) incidents.

Annual Site Environmental Reports (ASER)
ASERs are required by DOE O 231.1B. The ASERs provide important information needed by site managers and DOE Headquarters to assess field environmental program performance, site-wide environmental monitoring and surveillance effectiveness, and confirm compliance with environmental standards and requirements. They are also the means by which DOE sites demonstrate compliance with the radiological protection requirements of DOE O 458.1. In addition, ASERs are an important means of conveying DOE's environmental protection performance to stakeholders and members of the public living near DOE sites.

Regulatory Review Comment
DOE reviews and provides comments on emerging actions and technical documents developed by other Federal regulatory agencies and interagency and international committees on radiation protection and radioactive waste topics.
